Project
Construction of New Apron
Contract Type
This contract was negotiated with the client and carried out mainly on a cost plus basis. The client initiated this with us as they had recently carried out a similar project with another contractor which had been conventionally tendered and they had were not happy with either the working relationship or the finished job.
Contract Duration and Value
The contract took two months to complete and the value was approximately £375,000.
History
The Apron was adjacent to the main Airport Terminal Building and was to be in front of a proposed new hanger, work on which was to start on completion of the Apron (this hanger has now been completed). The need for the increase in available apron area for planes was seen by the client as part of their preparation for the 2012 Olympics. The client involved us from the very early stages of the project and we were able to involve our asphalt supplier technical team in advising on suitable construction materials, and show comparable costings on which he could base his budgeting and final construction design.
About the Works
The works involved the construction of a 4800m² apron adjacent to the main Apron in front of the Terminal and adjoining a taxiway. All the works were ‘airside’ and were in close proximity to planes during the entire project. The construction included all excavations, sub-bases, drainage and surfacing. The levels and drainage were designed to interact with the proposed new hanger.
Added Value
Our early involvement enabled the client to make cost saving decisions on the opportunities to trial newly designed surfacing materials on works we were carrying out in other, less critical areas of the Airport before laying them on the Apron. Good communications and understanding of the clients operational requirements enabled the project to meet both program and budget requirements.
